In reading the Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey there has been some insight given on the foundation principle of trust. He compares myths and realities. Some of these are shared here:
Myth: You either have trust or you don’t.
Reality: Trust can be both created and destroyed.
Myth: Once lost, trust cannot be restored.
Reality: Though difficult, in most cases lost trust can be restored.
Myth: You can’t teach trust.
Reality: Trust can be effectively taught and learned.
Myth: Trust is established one person at a time.
Reality: Establishing trust with the one establishes trust with the many.
Myth: Trusting people is too risky.
Reality: Not trusting people is a greater risk.
Telling the truth about trust is as important as telling the truth to gain trust.
Questions to Ponder:
1. How am I building trust in my relationships?
2.To what extent do people that I am close to trust me?
3. Who am I actively building trust with?
4.How much am I willing to risk by trusting?
Scripture: Proverbs 25:9 In the heat of an argument, don’t betray confidences; word is sure to get around, and no one will trust you. (The Message)
